Laboratory Sessions
MOF Synthesis and Characterization Training Program
Short Syllabus for High School Students

Option 1: Introduction to MOFs
• Fundamentals of materials chemistry and porous materials
• Overview of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): structure, properties, and real-world applications
• Key synthesis parameters (solvents, temperature, reaction time) and how they affect MOF formation
Option 2: Isolation-Identification of Microorganisms
- Isolation of microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, or mold from ecological environment or biological samples.
- Identification of microbial isolates using appropriate biochemical tests and genomic DNA extraction from pure cultures for molecular identification.
- Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of conserved gene regions and subsequent DNA sequencing of the obtained products.
- Taxonomic identification by analyzing sequencing data through BLAST search in gene databases to determine the closest representative species.
Laboratory Sessions
• In depth lab exposure under faculty mentorship
• Safety protocols and proper lab practices
• Observation and discussion of reaction progress and outcomes

Data Interpretation and Presentation
• Analyzing experimental results and understanding synthesis parameters
• Presenting findings and discussing challenges encountered in the lab
• Proposing solutions and improvements based on observed data

Program Outcomes
• Fundamental knowledge of MOF structures, synthesis, and characterization
• Practical laboratory skills and scientific communication experience
• Insight into current and future applications of MOFs in gas storage, catalysis, separation, and biomedical fields
• Increased interest in scientific research and critical thinking skills
