1:1 Research

The Research Scholar Program is designed to provide high school students with an immersive research experience in either Engineering/Science or Social Sciences/Humanities. Students are matched with a professor in their field of interest, offering a unique opportunity for personalized mentorship.

Program Structure

The program is divided into two main parts:

Part 1: Foundations of Research

Duration: 5-7 hours

This section focuses on equipping students with the essential tools and knowledge for conducting research and writing academic papers. Through interactive sessions led by the professor, students will learn:

Research Methodologies: Exploring the philosophy of research, understanding
different research approaches, and navigating ethical considerations.

Literature Review: Mastering techniques for conducting comprehensive literature
reviews, utilizing academic databases, and synthesizing information effectively.

Academic Writing: Learning the conventions of academic writing, including
structuring papers, formatting citations, and adhering to disciplinary style guides.

Field-Specific Resources: Identifying key journals, databases, and professional
organizations relevant to their chosen field.

• In engineering research, prototype development will also be made in this part of
the program before proceeding with the actual physical development of the
product.

At the end of Part 1, students will collaborate with their professor to define a suitable
research paper topic based on their interests and the professor’s expertise.

Part 2: Guided Research and Paper Development

Duration: Approximately 13-15 hours

In this phase, students will actively engage in the research process under the guidance of their professor. The focus shifts to student-led discussions and feedback sessions, where students provide updates on their progress and receive constructive criticism from their mentor. Activities include:

Research Execution: Conducting independent research, gathering data (if applicable), and analyzing findings.

Paper Development: Drafting, revising, and refining their research paper, incorporating feedback from the professor.

Milestone Reviews: Regular meetings to discuss progress, address challenges, and ensure the paper aligns with academic standards.

The program culminates in the submission of the completed research paper to a conference or academic journal, providing students with a tangible outcome and a valuable addition to their academic portfolio.

Program Delivery:

• Online Meetings: The primary mode of interaction will be through online meetings (e.g., Zoom) between the student and professor.

• In-Person Interaction: In Social Sciences/Humanities, in-person meetings can be arranged based on student preference. In Engineering/Sciences, in-person lab work will be incorporated when necessary.
