University Admissions in Europe: Requirements & How to Apply
As European universities continue to gain international recognition for their academic rigor, career opportunities, and affordability, more students and families are exploring degree options across the continent. Whether you’re considering a business program in the Netherlands, a medical degree in Italy, or liberal arts at a top UK university, understanding how the European admissions process works is essential.
This guide outlines the general application requirements for European universities and what students need to prepare.
Why Europe?
Before diving into the admissions process, it’s worth considering why Europe has become such a compelling option. From shorter degree durations to competitive tuition rates and globally respected institutions, European universities offer excellent value. We’ve discussed this trend in more detail in Why European Universities Are Becoming a Top Choice for International Students.
General Application Requirements for European Universities
Each country in Europe has its own higher education system, but many application requirements are consistent across the continent, especially for English-taught programs. Below are the core components most universities will expect:
1. Academic Transcripts
European universities typically ask for:
Official transcripts from the last 3–4 years of secondary education
A certified English translation, if the original is not in English
Information about your school’s grading scale
Some universities may also request predicted grades if you are still completing your final year.
2. Proof of Secondary School Completion
In most cases, students must have a qualification that is equivalent to the country’s university entrance requirement. For example:
- US Students may require full high school diploma plus AP test results.
- Turkish students usually need a Lise Diplomasi plus satisfactory scores on university entrance exams or IB/A-level equivalents.
For students with an IB Diploma or A-levels, many European universities offer direct admission.
3. Standardized or Entrance Exams
Entrance exam requirements vary by country and program:
Medicine programs in countries like Italy, Hungary, and Poland often require entrance exams (e.g., IMAT, BMAT, or a university-specific test).
Engineering or technical degrees in Germany and the Czech Republic may ask for SAT scores or subject-specific tests and may their own admissions testing.
Some Dutch universities may ask for additional assessments during their selection process.

4. Motivation Letter or Personal Statement
Your motivation letter (also known as a statement of purpose) is a critical piece of the application. It should clearly explain:
Why you’ve chosen the course or university
Your academic interests and future career goals
How your background prepares you for study in an international environment
At Admittance Education, we guide students through multiple drafts to ensure this document reflects both their voice and strategic fit with each program.
5. Proof of English Proficiency
If English is not your first language, you’ll likely need to submit one of the following:
TOEFL
IELTS
Cambridge English qualifications (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency)
Minimum scores vary but often fall in the range of:
IELTS: 6.0–7.0
TOEFL iBT: 80–100+
Some universities may waive the requirement for students from English-language high schools or IB programs taught in English.
Application Platforms & Deadlines
Depending on the country, students may apply through national platforms or directly to universities. A few examples:
UCAS for UK applications (used for up to 5 courses)
Studielink for Dutch universities
UniAssist for many German institutions
Direct university portals for schools in Spain, Italy, Hungary, and others
Application deadlines vary widely. For example:
UK (via UCAS): Sometime in January (varies each year)
Netherlands: January to May (depending on course and visa needs)
Italy, Spain, and Eastern Europe: April to July (rolling deadlines common)
